And so the end is upon us.
A few months ago, I noticed that Walgreens' around the Twin Cities area were carrying suspiciously different Twix PBs. Upon closer inspection, these were actually now called Twix Creamy Peanut Butter. Thinking that maybe the recipe for the peanut butter was all that had changed, I made a purchase.
Then the horror struck. This was not a change in peanut butter, but rather the chocolate cookie on the Twix's bottom half. It had now been reverted to its original Twix form that had not been seen since 2007. And so, the most aesthetically beautiful colored candy bar was no more.
Upon further research, however, this change appeared to be a fluke. No store or gas station carried the new version, with these only being relegated to Walgreens. Perhaps this was just a product test? After all, the Twix site made no mention of the change, not even in the picture for Twix PB.
But terrible inevitability has occurred. Yesterday I discovered Twix Creamy Peanut Butter at a tiny market inside St. Catherine University. The disease had spread. Upon further investigation, both the Twix site and the Twix wikipedia page now make reference to the change. From the latter:
Peanut Butter Twix (1983– 1997, 2000 – 2007, 2014 – present, US), peanut butter instead of the caramel filling. Introduced in North America in 1983, Peanut Butter Twix was coated with the standard (non-chocolate) fudge and was available until 1997. It was available again from 2000 until 2007, where it was replaced by Twix PB with the cookie flavor changed to chocolate. Reintroduced in late 2014 with the cookie flavor reverted to vanilla sugar cookie and a new recipe as "Twix Creamy Peanut Butter."
To add insult to injury, Mars Chocolate's Fall/Winter 2014 Press Kit:
The #1 consumer request among TWIX Brand fans was to "bring back the classic cookie" - so the new recipe includes a traditional crunchy, flavorful TWIX Cookie Bar instead of a chocolate cookie. This new item replaces TWIX Peanut Butter Cookie Bars and boasts a new recipe that is preferred by consumers and that provides a strong peanut butter impact. Also new are a more desirable name with the "creamy" descriptor that scores highest among consumers, [and] new packaging with simplified graphics that stand out on store shelves.
New TWIX® Creamy Peanut Butter Cookie Bars is a significant opportunity for TWIX Brand and for the Peanut Butter segment. Research reveals that only 4 percent of households are familiar with the current TWIX® Peanut Butter Cookie Bars; the 2015 re-launch will introduce the item to an untapped 96 percent of households.
I was that 4 percent, dammit.
This may continue to be a slow changeover, but it is a changeover nonetheless. My favorite comfort candy is marching on the way of the dodo. What has become of the world.
